Effect of multivitamin-mineral supplementation on cognitive function

In a recent study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the escalating demographic shift towards an aging population in the United States has raised concerns about the increased risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. 

By 2060, approximately one in four Americans will be aged 65 or older, emphasizing the urgent need for effective interventions. The study delves into the potential of multivitamin-mineral (MVM) supplementation as a safe and broadly applicable strategy to mitigate cognitive decline. 

Existing research has highlighted the correlation between modest deficits in cognitive function during aging and an elevated risk of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The study, unique in its approach, employs in-person detailed neuropsychologic assessments to comprehensively explore the effects of long-term MVM supplementation on cognitive change in older adults. 

The conclusive results from the COSMOS-Clinic study highlight a remarkable positive impact of daily multivitamin-mineral (MVM) supplementation on cognitive health. 

Over a span of two years, participants who incorporated daily MVM experienced a notably more favorable change in episodic memory. The comprehensive meta-analysis conducted within COSMOS cognitive sub-studies further underscored the significant benefits of daily MVM, not only in terms of global cognition but also specifically enhancing episodic memory.

These findings, derived from the rigorous examination within the COSMOS trial, provide compelling evidence supporting the proactive use of a daily MVM regimen as a preventive measure against cognitive decline among older adults.
